Quick Inspiration: Vintage Table Book Numbers

082809_books We love this idea from oncewed.com for oh-so-many reasons. For starters, it's real simple (phew). All you really need are those must-read titles, some colorful tape and an X-acto blade or scissors. If you're book lovers, this idea is extra special. Start by perusing rare book stores (or your own bookshelves) and handpicking the ones you want to share. (Score major points with books with extra pretty spines!) We heart this project because you're working with tape (not messy glue!) Plus, there are so many fun, patterned tapes available today. You can also try this very same idea using journals and encouraging friends and family to leave you a handwritten note (just be sure to leave a few pens on the tables!).

Heads up Book Lovers: If you are going to tape numbers onto a rare book, you may be ruining the book forever. If you are a book lover, chances are you keep your books in 'fine' condition and taping a book is not in your DNA.

You can make a custom book jacket -- easy as can be. But there is this trend to deface books that is really worrisome. (from the altered book movement, on.) Especially the 'pretty' books from 1900 - 1945. People are carving the insides out, all sorts of awful things.

As an ex-antiquarian book person and curator -- just be careful which books you use! You can contact me, if you want to go over the copies you want to use. Helen at invitesite.com

Sorry to be such a sot, but I wish someone stopped me when I spray painted my mother's original Eames chair.
