How-To: Terrarium Centerpieces

Terrarium_250Vintage mason jars are the ideal containers for a wedding centerpiece. They are beautiful, inexpensive, and make for a verdant, one of a kind centerpiece. You can find them all over –- start with antique stores or eBay. Add greenery to the jars to give your tables an earthy vibe. This project comes from Raven of Cheeky Stitch blog and shop.

Materials
Glass mason jar with lid
Activated charcoal
Potting soil
Small plants
Coarse builder'sand, pebbles or gravel
Chopsticks or bamboo skewers
Fresh live moss or Sheet moss (sometimes called preserved sheet moss)
Sphagnum Moss
Decorations (such as small toys, larger rocks, etc.)

Step 1: Lay down the ground work. (Terrariums are self-contained ecosystems, so it’s important to layer correctly to ensure a thriving environment for your plants.) Add 1/2 to 1 inch of coarse builders' sand, gravel, or pebbles. This is the drainage layer that captures excess moisture.

Step 2: Add a thin layer of charcoal granules to inhibit odors.

Step 3: Add a layer of Sphagnum Moss. It will keep the soil from seeping to the bottom.

Step 4: Add 1/2 to 1 inch of potting soil.

Step 5: When you’re adding plants to your terrarium keep the size of your jar in mind. (You don’t want the plants to overpower the jar.) When you’ve found one you like, loosen the root-ball and use your chop sticks or skewers to plant it into the jar with more potting soil. Then fill the space around the root-ball.

Step 6: Tear off pieces of sheet moss and place a single layer inside. The sheet moss will come back to life and thrive in the moist environment.

Step 7: Add rocks or any other embellishments. Water the terrarium lightly.
