How-To: Spice Rub Favor, Part 1

Spicerubfavor

With grilling season fast approaching, these spice rubs from Elizabeth Woodson of Elizabeth W. Gift Baskets and Shindig 411 make the perfect wedding favors. The "Sugar & Spice" rub is sweet and spicy and goes perfectly with fish and poultry, while the curry-based "Everything Nice" rub pairs well with chicken, beef and pork. Today, we'll show you how to make the rubs. Check back on Thursday for fun packaging instructions.

Materials
Sugar & Spice rub
1/2 cup paprika
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Everything Nice rub
1/3 cup curry powder
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons onion salt
3 tablespoons crumbled dried leaf thyme
2 tablespoons garlic salt
1 tablespoon cayenne pepper

To make each rub, combine all the ingredients in a large bowl, mix well and store in an airtight container. The number of individual favors you'll get out of each batch depends on the size of jars you package them in. Just be sure to keep the proportions consistent, and you can adjust the size of your batches however necessary.

Don't forget to check back on Thursday for the next part of this tutorial -- packaging!
